Authorities in California have arrested an elderly couple on suspicion of murdering their son-in-law, a high ranking executive at The New York Times. Jonathan McKinsey, 40, served as the newspaper’s director of engineering for games player experience and was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds in a parking lot in Dublin, about 35 miles east of San Francisco. The New York Times has since confirmed his death following the incident which took place late Thursday afternoon outside the Dublin Sports Grounds.

Police identified the suspects as Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77 years old. According to investigators and eyewitness accounts, the couple is accused of shooting McKinsey before calmly walking away from the scene. One witness reported seeing McKinsey collapse with severe injuries to his head and chest while observing the pair strolling away together shortly after a flurry of gunshots rang out. An officer happened to be passing by just minutes later and apprehended the couple, who had reportedly remained in the immediate area after the attack.

Zhang and Chen are currently being held at the Santa Rita jail where they face a series of grave charges including first degree murder, felony conspiracy, child endangerment, and willful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence. While it remains unclear if the couple has secured legal representation, they are scheduled to make their formal court appearance this coming Wednesday. Local law enforcement officials stated that they have not yet determined a motive for the killing.
